Unstoppable is a 2010 American action thriller film directed by Tony Scott, written by Mark Bomback, and starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Unstoppable is a drama about a runaway train is carrying a dangerous cargo of combustible liquids and poisonous gas. Two men, Frank Barnes and Will Colson, are sent by the yardmaster to do the near impossible board the runaway train and stop it before it is too late. They're chasing the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town. Throughout this thriller movie, there are lessons that we could learn, such as family is the most important and precious thing in the world, willing to sacrifice for others and earnest in making something so successful.
First lesson that I’ve learned from this movie is, family is the most important thing in the world. Will Colson, who has problem with his wife and in the process of divorce, want to apologize and get back with his family. Unfortunately, his wife refused to talk to him and even answered his call. While Frank Barnes, who has two daughters and his wife had passed away from cancer is very happy with his life. Unfortunately one day, one of his daughter sulks because he forgot that that day was her birthday and he could not celebrate her birthday because he had to go to work. Barnes and Colson meet and had to work together. On their journey, they talked about their family. Colson told Barnes that he regret and want to apologize to his wife for having thought that his wife is unfaithful while she is loyal towards him. Barnes did also told Colson that he loves his daughters so much and felt sad because her daughter did not want to talk to him just because his small mistake. After Barnes’s daughter saw their father and Colson’s wife saw her husband on television about the accident and their braveness, they tried to call them but failed. They were so worried about them and hoped that they will alright. At this part, I could see that these people love each other so much. At the end of the story, Colson got back together with his wife and Barnes’s daughters ask their father for his forgiveness and celebrate her birthday together with him.
The next lesson based on this movie is willing to sacrifice for others. Barnes and Colson were willingly to try frantically to stop a half-mile-long freight train carrying enough combustible liquids and poisonous gas from wipe out a nearby city. This can be proven by as the train passes, Barnes decides to put his locomotive in reverse and catch the runaway by coupling onto the back of it. Colson, at first reluctant because he knew that this idea may cause death to them, joins him. After Colson manually couples their locomotive to the train, they begin slowing it down with their own brakes, but are unable to slow the runaway down enough to safely navigate the curve. Barnes goes out onto the train and begins setting each car's brakes individually, but is stopped at a gap between two cars that is too wide to bridge. After coming out of the curve, however, the chase locomotive's brakes blow out and the train begins to pick up speed again.Ned the welder catches up to the train in his pickup truck and Colson jumps into the back of his truck. Driving at high speed they make it to the front of the runaway, where Colson jumps to the lead locomotive and finally stops the train. From this, I can see that their willingness to sacrifice for the others eventhough will harm themselves, give a lots of good benefits for both parties. They managed to save many lives and regarded as a hero.
The last but not least lesson from this movie is earnest in making something so successful. Everybody in this movie were trying so hard to stop the train. They had been thinking so many ways in order to stop the train. The company's plan, to have an engineer pilot a lashup of two locomotives into the main line ahead of the runaway and slow it down while another employee attempts to board the lead locomotive from a helicopter is unfortunately failed and caused the death of at least one of the employees. Another attempt to stop the train with derailers in a small town fails because the train is too heavy and going too fast. At last, Barnes and Colson’s plan managed to stop the train. This shows us that everybody were trying so hard and their cooperation had save many lives at the end of the story.
In conclusion, this movie had taught us many lessons such as we must love and care about our family because family is the most important thing in this world, sometimes we must sacrifice for the others and we have to try our very best to make things successful.
