Movie review – PAPADOM

'PapaDom'

Papadom is a movie directed by Afdlin Shauki, one of the most popular actor and director in our film industry. This movie tells a tale of Saadom who is a successful Nasi Kandar businessman in Pulau Pinang. His wife’s last wish before she leave the world is for him to take a good care of their one and only daughter, Mia. From a busy businessman who is so influent with his Nasi Kandar business, Saadom changes into a dependable father who is very much focused on his daughter’s life. As Mia grows up, she gets a bit annoyed with her father’s endless care and devotion towards her which at times seem too much too handle. A huge dilemma arises as Mia is all grown up and ready for university life. Saadom then panics as he has no idea how to fulfill his late wife’s wishes while she’s away.

Saadom with his beloved daughter, Mia

First lesson that I’ve learned from this movie is, parents love is priceless. It shows when Saadom willing to leave his business and apply a position as a gardener at the university where his daughter is. He wants to keep her eye on his daughter for every single minute. He also always tried to protect his daughter in so many ways as long as his daughter free from any dangerous. Hence, we have to appreciate our parents. If they didn’t show their love, it doesn’t mean, they hate us. It’s only their way not to show their love in front of their kids.

happy family, Saadom with his wife, Mun and their daughter, Mia

Second lesson from the movie played by best actress for FFM22 (Malaysia Film Festival 22), Liyana Jasmay (Mia), family is the most important thing in the world. Saadom is too obsessed with his business. He always forgot to spend his time with his beloved family. He even forgot his daughter’s birthday. He then feel regret when his wife died in an accident while she and their daughter on their way back from the daughter’s graduation day and at that time, he wasn’t there because he is too busy handling his restaurant. From this movie, what I’ve learnt is, in any situation, family comes first. If we lost our wealthy, we can get it back, but once we lost our family, then it will lost forever.

Mia with her  father and the uncles, Alan and Ali

Last but not least, the other lesson that I’ve learned from this movie is the value of friendship. In this movie, this lesson was shown in the scene when, Alan and Ali help Saadom to bring his wife to the nearest hospital for giving birth. They then, together built up the nasi kandar business. Alan also always reminded Saadom about his daughter’s birthday and helps him buy the present for Mia. Thus, we have to appreciate the value of friendship. If our friend is in trouble, we have to help him/her.

endless love

In conclusion, Papadom is not only a comedy movie. It sent us many value lessons so that we can use it in order to survive in our daily life. This movie tell us about the priceless love of a parents, the important of family and the value of friendship. Papadom also highlights about the variety of races in our country and the kindness of our community. For those who is never seen this movie before, I would love to recommend you guys to spend you’re a few hours to watch this movie and it will be nice if you can watch this movie with your beloved family.
